Definition: A plant or animal species is endangered if it is at risk of disappearing from the Earth. When a species disappears, it is extinct, meaning it can ever come back.
Since 1600, more than 700 species of plants and animals have gone extinct
There are about 400 animals in the United States who are listed as endangered. Worldwide, there are about 500 animals listed as endangered and 44 listed as threatened.
1. North America has many endangered species, more so than anywhere in the world.
2.As of May 31, 2000, there are 1,051 animals species procted under Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decides which species in the United States are threatened and which are endangered through a Listing Program. The review process starts when someone sends a petition to the Service. The petition asks the Service to see if there is evidence that the species is on the edge of extinction. A species will be classified as endangered if there is enough evidence. The decision is based on science, not politics.
Animals at risk of extinction are protected by the Endangered Species Act which states that when a species is endangered, it is illegal to kill, harm, or take the species out of its habitat.
3. By about 1940 there were hardly any wolves left in the United States. Only 300 or so were left.
4. In the United States, wolves are mostly endangered.
5. Many animals, such as snakes and whales, are getting killed because of people want to use their skin to produce consumer goods.
6. In the United States, 735 speices of plants and 496 animals species are listed as threatened or endangered.
7. Worldwide, more than 1000 speices are listed as endangered.
8. Europe has the least amount of endangered of the world.
9. The ESA (Endangered Species Act) made it illegal to harm endangered animal in the year 1973.
10.Just a few of the hundreds of animals on the endangered species list are: African elephants, Asian elephants, West Indian manatees, American alligators, Western gorillas, grizzly bears, Florida cougars, jaguars, tigers, black rhinos, California condors, humpback whales, sperm whales, green sea turtles, Atlantic salmon, and red wolves.

Although I know that every living thing serves its purpose, I can honestly say that the thought of snakes diminishing in numbers is not a sad thing.

We need to add some more facts to this page. What facts have the potential to really WOW the audience? We need to find some surprising information. Gather a list of endangered species and on the iMovie you can show clips of all the species on the list. Why should people bother protecting the animals? How do animals contribute to the environment? (look up the answer in your science textbook) Add some facts that explain what people can do to help protect endangered animals.

Can animals be saved even though they were extinct.
Karen E. Diaz said

No, Jeffery, unfortunately, once an animal is extinct, there is no turning back. Think of the dinosaurs, can we bring them back? So, you see it is important to try to protect endangered species that we have now before it is too late!
